The nocturnal aesthetic of Italian Modern architecture and art, after II World War to the Seventies

Abstract

It’s deeply interesting the relationship between Modern Italian architecture and artistic disciplines in nocturnal Urban spaces. From Giacomo Balla to Lucio Fontana, from Luchino Visconti to Roberto Rossellini, from Gio Ponti to Archizoom, the symbolic function of artificial light increases the significance of Artistic masterpieces. Electricity creates strong illusion, lighting enhances architectures revealed by Cinema and visual art. Gio Ponti is one of the few architects in Italy which, as editor of Domus, emphasizes the role of the light as a tool to create a second life to architecture. Nightlife. Inside the magazine,1948, he wrote the article, Beauty of the machine, that opens a debate about architectures of the night: “only Modern architecture is nocturnal architecture today: Ancient architecture at night disappeared in the dark or only appeared in its profiles (...). Modern architecture is an architecture of the negative, and is the first and most pure abstract art”.

Già in principio l’elettricità è connotata dal forte potenziale estetico del suo essere creatrice di arte. Lo stesso Ernst Cassirer nella sua Philosophie der symbolischen Formen evidenziava come il contrasto fra giorno e notte, tra luce e oscurità potesse interpretarsi come vera e propria essenza dello sviluppo culturale dell’umanità. Per quanto riguarda in specifico l’architettura della città, il tema della luce è un capitolo storico-culturale-artistico fondamentale dell’architettura europea del XX secolo e dell’architettura moderna italiana in particolare. La notte, con la sua luce artificiale, non fa altro che aumentare l’emozionalità di un luogo. Oltre al rapporto estetico tra architettura, luce artificiale ed arte sviluppato nelle correnti futuriste italiane è stimolante indagare successivamente cosa sia successo tenendo presente i fondamentali eventi storici del Novecento, tra dittature, guerre, ricostruzioni e speranze verso la modernità.
