The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between financing of research (public and private) and economic growth. Data from Eurostat are used. The methodology applies descriptive statistics, correlation, regression and cluster analyses. The main results are: the private rather than public financing of research is the cause of the economic growth of countries and increases of productivity. Moreover the best economic performance has been achieved by USA, followed by Europe and Japan. Italy instead has higher public funds of research than private one and the results is low rate of economic growth over time. In all Japan case study shows that to be technological leader is not sufficient to increase economic growth but it is also necessaries to have a stability in economic and financial system.en
