Jeux et enjeux intertextuels dans “Le Soleil ni la mort ne peuvent se regarder en face” de Wajdi Mouawad

Abstract

La trilogia Le Soleil ni la mort ne peuvent se regarder en face di Wajdi Mouawad ripercorre la storia di Tebe, dalle origini fino alla decadenza. Nell’intento di rintracciare le ragioni profonde che hanno condotto alla distruzione della leggendaria città, il drammaturgo riprende alcune delle maggiori tragedie dell’antichità classica, talvolta amplificandole o modificandole, allo scopo di mettere in luce personaggi o aspetti, che nell’ipotesto originale risultavano poco approfonditi e che invece, agli occhi di Mouawad, appaiono centrali per la comprensione della condizione tragica in cui versa l’uomo di tutti i tempi. Quest’ultima trova del resto una sintesi mirabile nella massima di La Rochefoucauld che fa da titolo alla trilogia mouawadiana.

Wajdi Mouawad’s trilogy Le Soleil ni la mort ne peuvent se regarder en face retraces the history of Thebes from its origins to its decadence. With the aim of identifying the deepest reasons which led to the destruction of the legendary city, the dramatist draws upon some of the greatest classical tragedies by amplifying or reworking them, in order to throw light on those characters or features that were overlooked in the hypotext and, for Mouawad, were crucial to understand the inherently tragic condition of man. It is exactly this sense of the tragic that is beautifully summarised by La Rochefoucauld’s maxim after which the trilogy is named.
