On Pauline Quotation Modes and Their Textual-Literary Value. A Brief Note On “2 Timothy”, 2, 19

Abstract

In his passage 2 Timothy 2,19 Saint Paul quotes two passages – or, at least, so he says – from the Old Testament. Yet, while the first citation appears to be an almost verbatim quotation from Numbers 16, 5, the second does not refer to any specific passage. As such, it can be read as a summary of a variety of biblical passages. Philologists and exegetes ought to include this pastoral among Saint Paul’s authentic epistles, as it reflects his typical style and also suggests when, biographically, it was written.

Il passo paolino di 2 Timoteo 2, 19 contiene due citazioni che vengono presentate come riferimenti diretti di origine veterotestamentaria. Tuttavia, mentre nel primo caso pare si tratti di una citazione quasi verbatim da Numeri 16, 5, la seconda, non trovando riscontro letterale in alcuna parte delle Scritture, può essere letta come distillato a senso di diversi princìpi biblici. A sua volta, ciò dovrebbe fornire uno spunto ai filologi e agli esegeti per dare ragione della reinclusione di questa Pastorale tra le genuine epistole paoline, poiché rispecchierebbe il suo stile e un suo modo riconosciuto di argomentare, gettando anche luce sul tempo in cui, biograficamente, si situi la stesura della lettera stessa.
