There are several brands of No Grain diets for pets on the market, accounting for over 40% of dry dog food available in the United States of America. No Grain or Grain Free diets are balanced diets where cereals, which are one of the three main ingredients, by quantity, contained in pet food, are replaced by legumes or other ingredients. Changing the ingredients can bring both benefits, for example the improvement of the problems of allergic reactions related to cereals, and disadvantages for example related to an excess of protein in the diet.In July 2018 FDA started a study on the possible correlation between Grain Free diets and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. This retrospective study conducted by the FDA, which included 515 cases of DCM in different dog breeds (also including breeds normally not predisposed to this pathology), has led, in recent years, to an increase in the number of investigations focused on this potential link. |
