| en |
dc.description.abstract | The use of glass as a structural element in architecture is marked out by the intrinsic brittleness of this material. For this reason, glass plies are usually laminated with polymeric interlayers such as PVB, EVA, SGP. The primary function of the interlayer is to impart to the glass a reliable safety performance: since the fragments remain attached to the polymer even after glass breakage, the system still maintains a certain load bearing capacity even in the post-critical phase. The fragments, kept coherent by these polymeric materials, avoid sudden collapse (fail-safe response), augmenting the stiffness of the system. However, the safety performance is annihilated if the connection to the load-bearing back structure is not able to retain the panels in their place after glass breakage. Fundamental aspects as safety, performance and aesthetic have been considered in the development of an innovative point-fixing device for frameless glazing. In this system, the essential role is played by the use of Dupont’s Sentry Glass Plus (SGP) polymer as interlayer. The conception is original because the metallic part is already integrated with the laminated glass and can be directly connected to any load bearing back structure. In fact, the SGP interlayer, slightly extended beyond the edge of the glass plies in proximity of their borders, is bent at right angle and directly attached to metallic clamps right during the lamination process. The attaching device exhibits a noteworthy resistance and interesting post-glass-breakage performances, since collapse of the panel may be prevented even when the glass plies are completely fragmented because this is directly attached through the polymer interlayer. Static and cyclic tests have been performed on small scale glass beams at various room temperatures and aging level. Bending tests on full scale glass plies confirm the results obtained on smaller specimens and the optimal post critical behavior of this point fixing-system. Results of these tests and practical applications of this new connection to recently-built glass-façades are illustrated. | en |
