In the animal kingdom, the human being is the only organism who has to live with the awareness that one day his life will cease to exist. This painful reality can generate fear and anxiety, all aspects that are part of the broader concept of thanatophobia, which is defined as the apprehension experienced in everyday life, due to the anticipation of the state in which one is dead (Tomer, 1992). It is precisely thanatophobia, or fear of death, the subject of this dissertation. In the first chapter, the behaviours of human and non-human animals facing death are taken into account, in order to consider similarities and differences. In the second chapter it is shown how the construct of thanatophobia was defined by various authors, considering the differences existing between anxiety and fear of death and the multidimensionality of the construct; subsequently, the chapter presents the investigation of the historian Ariès on the attitudes of the human being towards death from the Middle Ages up to the present day, a theoretical overview - both philosophical and psychological - on the fear of death, and which are the most used tools to measure the construct of fear of death or anxiety of it. The third chapter deals with the fear of death “from A to Z”: the psychological ontogenesis (i.e., how it develops), the characteristics, the antecedents, the consequences, and the clinical treatments that can be adopted to face up to this fear when it becomes pathological. The fourth chapter takes into account the correlates of death anxiety, namely all those variables that can affect the degree of fear of death. Specifically, the chapter explores the socio-demographic factors (gender, age, ethnicity, education, occupation), personal/personality factors (religion, locus of control, self-esteem...), variables related to well-being and those related to maladjustment; eventually, the chapter will discuss the different levels of awareness of the fear of death and how the personal meanings of death can have an impact on the fear of death. Finally, in consideration of the historical period we are still experiencing, in the last chapter it is shown a meta-analysis of the current studies in literature of the fear of death related to Covid-19.
