The past 50 years have seen a growth in the interest towards the study of human-animal interactions (HAI), with a progressive increase in the number of activities involving non-human animals to improve people’s biopsychosocial health. The present work will pay special attention to the so-called human-animal bond, a subcategory of the HAI field, focusing on 5 primary goals: 1) provide an overview of the phylogenesis of the phenomenon; 2) identify the species generally involved in the bond and the phenotypical characteristics they exhibit; 3) report the main theories used to explain the existence of the bond and the neuroendocrine mechanisms that support it; 4) discuss the bioethical repercussions of HAI; 5) disclose the health benefits people experience from interspecific interactions and how this connection could be used within several clinical fields. |
