Evidence from literature suggests that there may be a mutual influence between social network’s abuse and psychological well-being in adolescence, and that, in this context, emotional intelligence and a functional emotional regulation act as protective factors. In this paper, the relationships between social networks’ use, emotional skills, tendency to anxiety, depression and stress will be analyzed, using data collected through the administration of online questionnaires in a sample of 226 students aged between 16 and 18 years of the cities of Parma, Milan and some cities of the Tuscany region. The Bergen Social Media Scale (BSMAS), the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) were compiled in anonymously by students, in the period from March 2020 to June 2020. Analysis’ results highlighted a greater social networks’ abuse and a greater level of general distress in girls compared to boys who, on the other hand, get an higer score in the trait emotional intelligence’s dimension. Furthermore, the social networks’ abuse was found to negatively affect psychological well-being, worsening the symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression. A precarious psychological well-being was found to be the cause of lower levels of trait emotional intelligence, which in turn proved to be a protective factor in the context of a social networks’ addiction. Contrary to the assumptions, there was no increase in the social networks’ use in the period coinciding with the compilation and the lockdown imposed by the diffusion of COVID-19, compared to the previous year. Ultimately, the results obtained support the need to implement programs aimed at adopting the correct approach to the digital world and the growth of emotional intelligence in order to consequently reduce dysfunctional behaviors and lifestyles in adolescence.
