Il tema della Smart City è oggi pervasivo e dominante rispetto a qualunque altro tema tradizionale urbano. Rappresenta una priorità strategica di Horizon 2020 dal quale le diverse regioni europee mutuano gli indirizzi locali in materia di ricerca e innovazione. Ci sembrava però che a fronte di questa assoluta e condivisibile importanza del tema non ci fosse sufficiente chiarezza rispetto alle ricadute pratiche e operative. Oggigiorno, tutte le figure professionali preposte agli interventi e alle trasformazioni urbane, dai tecnici ai politici, parlano di Smart City senza averne ben chiaro il significato e soprattutto senza sapere come intervenire nella città europea per indirizzare la trasformazione. Naturalmente ciò vale in particolar modo per gli architetti. Con l’obiettivo di mettere ordine nel pensiero teorico del progetto – che benché azione preminentemente pratica ha bisogno di un sostrato che faccia da fondamento all'azione e ne garantisca un'applicazione generalizzabile – abbiamo chiesto alla comunità di studiosi di restituirci le loro conoscenze sotto forma di studi teorici o esperienze pratiche relativamente al tema, non senza prima esporre induttivamente il nostro pensiero in merito.

The Smart City theme currently pervades and overrides any other traditional urban issue. It represents a strategic priority of Horizon 2020 in which the various regions of Europe change vein locally when it comes to research and innovation. However, it seemed to us that despite the agreed pre-eminence of the theme, there was insufficient clarity as regards practical and operational consequences. Currently, all professional figures in charge of urban interventions and transformations, from technicians to politicians, talk about Smart Cities without a clear idea of the meaning, and above all, without knowing how to intervene in a European city to pilot its transformation. Naturally, this applies particularly to architects. In order to bring order to the theoretical thinking on design – which, albeit a predominantly practical action, requires a substrate to act as a foundation and guarantee a generalizable application – we asked the community of scholars to reciprocate with their own insights in the form of theoretical studies or practical experience on the theme, but not without first inductively expressing our own thoughts on the matter.
