Abstract: By using the Gas Endeavour instrument, the evaluation “in vitro” of the GAS PRODUCTION has been conducted on a ration for dairy cattle to which additives capable of conditioning ruminal fermentations have been added. This instrument allows to: a) operate with 500 ml batches, 400 ml of which are used for the ruminant inoculum and for the buffer solutions; b) simulate the physiological rumen movements by continuous or discontinuous stirring; c) operate using a substrate quantity between 2 and 8 g of dry sample or about 20 grams of fresh forage, depending on the intrinsic characteristics of each substrate; d) measure and register continuously the amount of gas produced on 15 batches. Cumulative gas production profile of 24 hours interval was evaluated at a temperature of 39 °C under discontinuous stirring (20 seconds on and 40 seconds off). Van Soest buffer, macro-mineral and micromineral solutions were used to obtain the fermentation medium while the Van Soest method was the reference for the determination of the amount of rumen fluid inoculum, medium and sample substrate, that were proportioned to batches of 400 ml. The fermentation trials were made on a Unifeed ration for dairy cattle for the production of Parmigiano Reggiano to which Bioflavex has been added at the dose of 50, 100, 200 and 400 g/cattle/day. Bioflavex (Exquim S.A., Barcelona, Spain) is a blend of natural flavonoid extracts comprising mostly Naringine (200 g/kg), which is extracted from bitter orange (Citrus 4 aurantium) and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi; 400 g/kg). From the existing literature it was hypothesized that Bioflavex could exert some antimicrobial effects on ruminal bacteria. Five grams of pre-dried control sample and five grams of pre-dried experimental samples have been placed in three batches for each treatment. The fermentation trials lasted 24 hours and were repeated under the same conditions twice. The average amount of gas produced (ml/g DM), did not change at the end of the test while the gas flow was significantly modified by the presence of Bioflavex, from the beginning of each test up to 8 hours of fermentation. From the 8th hour to the end, the positive effect of Bioflavex failed. Bioflavex increased gas production compared to the control group (+ .....) (P<0.05) only at dosages of 100, 200 and 400 g/cattle/day and in both tests. Bioflavex, at the dosages used, also favoured the synthesis of volatile fatty acids AGV to the extent of +64.23% for acetic acid, +37.15% for propionic acid, +78.38% for butyric acid (P<0.05). This effect is also confirmed in the research of Balsel et al. 2012. Flavonoid supplementation by Bioflavex might be effective in improving rumen fermentation and increasing AGV production.
