During a task, in wich the attention is focused on a certain point of space, the unexpected appearance of a distractor stimulus causes a relocation of the attentional focus: this shift has costs in term of the behavioral performances, as reaction times and accuracy. The P3a, in literature, is described as an ERP component reflecting the attentional capture elicited by the distractor stimuli (Theeuwes, 1991; Yantis, S., &Egeth, H. E., 1999, Sawaki R., Katayama J. 2007). This component is modulated by the perceptual load required by the task: in the present study, a 3 stimuli visual oddball (target, standard, distractor), the perceptual load was controlled by changing the size of the target stimulus during the two different task conditions (easy and difficult). The emotional stimuli, even if they’re presented as distractors and for this reason they’re not central for the execution of the task, are capable of eliciting an efficient attentional capture (De cesarei & Codispoti, 2007; Padmala & Pessoa, 2014). Nonetheless in the 2016 study of Ferrari et al., a three stimuli oddball where the distractors, target and standard were presented in the center of the screen, the elicited P3a was not modulated by the interaction between the emotional meaning of the distractor and the task difficulty. These results may suggest that the P3a could reflect a superficial change detection without being modulated by the emotional meaning of the distractor, contrary to the LPP. An alternative hypothesis could be represented by the influence of the position of the distractor: the central position of the distractor could increase the efficiency of its detection such as its emotional benefits are not substantial. In order to verify these assumptions in the present study the distractor stimuli were present in a peripheral position of the attentional focus. This difference in the position of the distractor could elicit an emotional modulation of the P3a. The results show that the amplitude of the P3a is higher in the easy condition compared to the difficult one. Conversely, the emotional meaning of the distractor didn’t elicit a significant modulation of the P3a, but it did influence the amplitude of the LPP: the amplitude of the component is significantly higher for the emotional distractors compared to the neutral ones. These results support the assumption that the P3a could reflect a superficial change detection and that the processing of the emotional stimuli is managed by the LPP.it
