"Pilot project for slow wave sleep modulation through stimulation of the mirror system. Research design and first results. "Intends to show the first session of the electrophysiological study performed in the Sleep Center of the University Hospital of Parma with the aim of verifying the relationship between the activation of mirror neurons, and the consequent modification of the waves slow in sleep. First of all, the literature on the key points investigated in the project will be shown, namely the mirror system and sleep. On the mirror neurons will be described the nature, characteristics and methods of analysis, finally arriving at one of their most important functions in the clinical field, or their learning ability. While on sleep we will describe the structure and related electroencephalographic features to finally reach the ability of slow waves to provoke the so-called synaptic downscaling, fundamental in the forms of learning during sleep. The experiment used 12 healthy volunteers, who underwent two consecutive nights of video stimulation and polysomnography. The results confirmed the initial hypothesis on the connection between mirror neurons and SWA modulation (Slown Waves Activity). This is to be considered very promising for a possible use in rehabilitation.
