Hypothyroidism is a common clinical syndrome in dogs due to a deficit of thyroid hormones. It results from any dysfunction along the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis: it is called primary hypothyroidism when the dysfunction primarily affects the thyroid gland, secondary or central hypothyroidism when it primarily affects the pituitary gland. There are both congenital and acquired forms; more frequently there are acquired forms that affect adult subjects and in most cases are the result of lymphocytic thyroiditis or idiopathic atrophy of the thyroid. Several studies have shown the predisposition of some breeds to develop this syndrome. In order to guarantee a good therapeutic success and consequently a return to normal thyroid function, it is necessary to approach a correct diagnostic approach, intervening as soon as the characteristic symptoms of the disease appear. In this paper the pathology will be treated in its different aspects: from its incidence to the various clinical signs, identifying which is the most appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approach.
