The present manuscript focuses on the minimally invasive surgical techniques used to perform prophylactic gastropexy in dogs predisposed to the gastric dilation-torsion syndrome (GDV). The laparo-assisted, endoscopic-assisted and totally laparoscopic gastropexy techniques were described, and pre- and post-operative complications were reported. Furthermore, these three different techniques were compared for efficacy, side effects, and postoperative pain. All techniques resulted safe and effective, and no significant differences were found as regards side effects and postoperative pain. In conclusion, based on the current veterinary literature, the minimally invasive prophylactic gastropexy is an excellent method of surgical prevention of GDV in dogs, and therefore it must be taken into great consideration, especially for dogs with high risk of GDV. |
