This paper comes from an analysis of literature about relationship with the other in an educational, social and emotional context that is fundamental for the development of the child: the shared reading. I have been interested to quantifying the effect of this activity on the cognitive, social, emotional and linguistic development of children with typical development and in children with ASD in which the communicative, social and shared attention skills are compromised. I have elaborated comments, reflections, opinions, criticisms that are behind activities like these. I will explain the mechanisms that some authors believe are involved when one person comes in contact with each other, and I will explain the intersubjective and the Theory of Mind processes, and the neural bases interconnected with each other; if an aspect is neglected, there is the risk of not developing the other. During the shared reading, involving the attention on the text, on the voice, increases the use of different perceptive senses and stimulates the emergence of mental representations. The child is like he’s acting with the characters of the story, reflecting themselves in them and developing a reflexive or critical sense for a moral conscience. Important is the role of the parents, we will see how a certain style in telling and discussing with the child about certain events, meanings, emotions will contribute to an adequate development of the Theory of Mind in the child to explore their mental states without limits. Therefore, reading quantity is not important, but its quality. What happens if you use shared reading with a child with autism spectrum syndrome? There are different opinions on intersubjective and Theory of Mind processes to try to explain the specific deficits of this disorder such as language, communication, interaction and various attentional processes. Many studies investigated the effectiveness of shared reading to try to improve and, in some cases to develop, communicative, emotional, cognitive and social skills that are indispensable for the child development. Although, the high interpersonal demand required by shared reading, it is possible to create routine reading moments in an organized and structured way to make not a frustrating moment for the child with ASD, but a positive experience. The narration represent a therapeutic context where the child will experience social interaction, he will come into relationship with the other through the use of images of the books. He will learn to share the meaning and the essence of the story that he will use to generalize in his own reality. In fact, the mental states of the characters, their behaviors and their intentions will be compared with those experienced in the child's real life. The shared reading is an opportunity to learn to "travel mentally over time", because they are children who have difficulty organizing events over time, explaining the antecedents and consequences of these events. Moreover, through the use of narratives, like Social Stories and Digital Storytelling, it can be taught to children with ASD the appropriate behaviors to assume in certain social contexts; favoring in this way the cognitive, social and emotional development of these children. Therefore, the shared reading represents the unique promise to intervene in social and emotional child development and in child literacy processes, and particularly in children with ASD.
