Before the invention of photography, self-portraits were probably painted with the aid of mirrors, meaning that the left side of the individual’s face was painted on the left side of the canvas, as opposed to portraits, in which the left side of the sitter’s face was painted on the right side of the canvas. Several studies found various left-side biases: greater expressivity of the left side of the face, a left cheek bias (a preference to display one’s left cheek), a left visual field advantage (a preference and improved performance when stimuli are presented in the left visual field), a left gaze bias (a preference to gaze for frequently and longer on the left side of centrally presented faces). Despite these biases being frequently studied in literature, their co-occurrence is rarely analysed. Portraits and self-portraits have generally been used to study the left cheek bias, but, given their peculiar characteristics, they are interesting experimental stimuli for the study of co-occurring attentional and perceptive biases. In order to evaluate the biases’ role, while controlling for the hemifaces’ exposition, twelve canonical portraits, twelve canonical self-portraits and their horizontally flipped format were used as experimental stimuli. An eye-tracking and behavioural experiments were conducted with the aim to explore a possible different visual scan path, in terms of first fixation latency and duration, and judgements expressed by participants, especially regarding the emotional intensity of the depicted faces. The study showed that self-portraits are experienced differently with respect to portraits, even if they cannot be explicitly categorized as such. Results revealed a higher emotional intensity and a shorter first fixation latency for self-portraits rather than portraits. Furthermore, the first fixation was longer for the self-portraits’ left cheek compared to portraits’, regardless of the congruence with the left visual field. The duration of the first fixation, on the other hand, was longer for portraits’ left cheek in the condition of congruence between left hemiface and left hemifield, when compared to self-portraits’ left heifield in the condition of non-correspondence (right hemiface). Thus, the present study could be a starting point for the exploration of both the simultaneous presence of several left-side biases and the different perception of portraits and self-portraits.it
