The aim of the present study is to understand whether the condition of early bilingualism fasters the linguistic ability of children in different specific functional areas of language and to evaluate whether the Theory of Mind is positively influenced by the experience of bilingualism. We then assessed linguistic proficiency in eight bilingual children and eight monolingual children through the 'TVL' test and we also assessed their ability to solve a false belief task through the 'Sally Anne Test'. The comparison between averages and analysis performed using the Mann-Whitney test showed differences between the two groups. Regarding the first objective, we have verified that bilingual children have a clear advantage in a single specific functional sector of language, namely repetition. However, in the tests of understanding and naming the children belonging to the two groups obtained the same results. Finally, monolingual children would seem to be more advantaged in the spontaneous production tests on the subject. Regarding the second objective, our data would be in line with the works in the literature, which shows how early experience with two different linguistic codes produces positive effects on the development of the theory of mind. Despite some limitations, the present study indicates that early bilingualism has advantages at a cognitive and metalinguistic level and it is a concrete demonstration that the acquisition of multiple linguistic codes entails some differences between bilingual and monolingual individuals.
