In this paper it was proposed to clarify the main aspects related to the debate between wellfare, rights of the laboratory animal and the motivations that require its use in the experimentation. In the first analysis we asked ourselves what are the methods and the logic adopted when planning an experiment, from the choice of the experimental design to the verification of the experimental hypothesis, outlining the steps related to the definition of the experimental unit and the calculation of the number minimum of animal necessary for the correct conduct of the experiment, reducing to the minimum errors due to bias, variability within or between individuals, favoring the maximum generalization of the obtained data. It is described the most recent regulations regarding research with animals and the impact they have on the management and on the design process of the experiments. Furthermore, it has been investigated how the researchers and the project managers are constantly in communication with the ethical committees that verify the requisites and the suitability of the experimentation according to the regulations in force. Subsequently, it has been analyzed the main animal models used in the research and for which reasons the species, races or strains have been studied: has also been described the contribution that the research with animals has provided to the scientific knowledge in relation to the study of pathologies, treatments, drugs, vaccines, et cetera. Furthermore, alternative strategies have been introduced to the use of animal models according to the criteria defined by Russel and Burch, ie the 3R principle. In addition, we asked ourselves which are the animal's living conditions and haw animal welfare is assessed, considering whether and how this concept between man and animal is differentiated. Once defined the main methods for the assessment of wellfare in humans, we have also analyzed these aspects in the animal. With animals, the wellfare has proved to be much more complex to define, dividing researchers between various different approaches : deepening the different welfare assessment strategies, using animal wellfare also as synonym of well-being. Tyng to indicate the strengths and limits for each of them considering also an innovative approach, not yet scientifically validated, which is a potential step forward in the study of well-being itself. In the last part of the paper, there is a discussion on the aspects that have proved most critical in defining and evaluating the status of the laboratory animal. The confrontation between man and animal is resumed, reaching the ethical process that has led to the current status of the moral value of the animal itself, concluding by answering the questions posed in the introduction, that the alternatives to the use of animals in the experimental field are, at the moment, not sufficient to prevent its use.
