This work aims at presenting a state of the art of Brain-Computer Interface, devices that can communicate the central nervous system with an external peripheral. This possibility is given by the available recording techniques, especially electroencephalography. Recording electrical activity can allow to control multiple devices with only mental activity. The different fields of application (motor and psychological) will be discussed. Specifically, in the first part, will be observed an excursus of Brain-Computer Interface; we will focus on the evolution of this device and its operations. We will examine the techniques of brain recording and the neural signals used to ensure that these devices are really effective for users. We will also consider the new developments regarding the Brain-Computer Interface. In the second chapter, will be explored the features and peculiarities of audio-visual entrainment. In particular, will be observed the effects of visual and acoustic stimuli on the brain and the research on cerebral synchronization. In the third chapter will be described the research carried out at the Cognitive Psychology Laboratory of the Department of Medicine and Surgery (Parma). The experiment was carried out with a prototype of BCI called “Neuro-Upper” (NU), which uses visual and acoustic stimulation to generate a synchronization of brain oscillations. Each subject, before and after treatment (90 sessions of 30 minutes), was evaluated by clinical and neuropsychological measures. The aim of the research was to improve the emotional state and to enhance cognitive abilities (to areas such as attention and memory). The results showed a remarkable improvement in tests that evaluate cognitive abilities and a remission of depressive symptoms in some subjects. Finally, will be discussed the limits and upcoming challenges to confirm the therapeutic efficacy of this BCI.
