In the last few decades cognitive neuroscience has extended its field of investigation to art, in particular to visual art, leading to the birth of a new research’s field called neuroaesthetics. The discovery of mirror neurons and a new model of visual perception (Embodied Simulation) provided empirical evidence on the fundamental role of empathy in aesthetic experience, based not only on a purely introspective aspect and explicit judgment, but on a specific mechanism that finds its foundation in the brain-body system. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of visual exploration during the presentation of digital artworks. In particular, the purpose was to verify how the number and duration of fixations changed depending on aesthetic qualities and haptic qualities, evoking a "sense of presence". To this purpose, we used Israeli artist Ori Gersht’s artworks, high-resolution photographs, often illustrating still lifes in movement. The high resolution and methods used by Ori Gersht to produce these digital artworks were perfect for achieving this goal. Since this artist uses high resolution images and techniques to freeze a moving scene, participants’ visual exploration has been considered, not only during their aesthetic judgment, but also during their sensory-motor judgment. One of the aim was, in fact, to verify whether and how the features of digital artworks, such as the ones in question, caused in the participants, not only aesthetic pleasure, but also a "sense of presence". The study was conducted by recording the eye movements of 30 participants during the exploration of Ori Gersht's digital artworks that were presented in two different sizes (complete and detail) and two different resolutions (high and low). Each participant had to provide, for each image, an aesthetic and sensory-motor judgment. We have considered the duration and number of fixations of the Areas Of Interest (AOIs) that were attended to at least by 51% of the participants. The results showed a greater number and duration of fixations when participants had to express subjective aesthetic judgment, indicating a possible connection between the emotional involvement of the observer and the exploratory pattern caused from this specific condition. In general, a high number and a longer duration of the fixations were measured, depending on the task required, when participants explored high resolution and complete images, suggesting that the properties of the original artworks of Ori Gersht are important in order to cause both the aesthetic pleasure and the "sense of presence”, the latter being especially evoked by the haptic qualities of the stimulus. Moreover, the fact that participants used longer fixations to give a proximity judgment when the artwork was in high resolution and detail size compared to the same size, but in low resolution, would indicate that these features of the artwork induce a reduction in the distance between the body of the observer and the image, suggesting the use not only of visual components but also sensory-motor ones. The present results revealed a possible emotional involvement when participants had to give a personal aesthetic judgment compared to when they had to explore the image by thinking of a more "objective" aesthetic judgment. In addition, it emerged that the power of involvement of Ori Gersht's artworks was emphasized not only by the content but also by the employed techniques, since the different exploration pattern, depending on the sensory-motor judgment required, could indicate the presence of a link between the work of art and the observer’s body.it
