Several researches have investigated the concept of affordances, pragmatic features of the objects that promote the interaction with them, since they are able to activate specific motor programs. It has been shown that affordances don’t concern only objects but also language and that the relationship between language processing and motor system is bidirectional. Specifically, three grammatical categories have been investigated until now: verbs, nouns and adjectives. These studies’ findings belong to the embodied cognition theoretical perspective, which claims that cognitive processes, such as perception and language, are not abstract, but are strongly rooted in body experience and in the interaction with external environment. Following Gough et al. (2013), the present research aims to test whether linguistic processing of adjectives associated with nouns of graspable objects, artificial and natural, may modulate the noun motor activation. Two stimuli validation pre-tests have been created in order to select the nouns and adjectives combinations to be used in the experiment. The 96 selected combinations consisted in 32 combinations with antiaffordance adjectives, 32 with neutral adjectives and 32 catch adjectives. One half of the nouns referred to objects graspable with a power grip and the other half referred to objects graspable with a precision grip. Reactions times have been recorded after presenting linguistic stimuli in a lexical decision task. The motor response consisted in a specific kind of grip simulation relative to the presented noun category. From the experiment it results that the motor activation is differently modulated by the kind of adjective processed, and that it would depend on the kind of grip evoked by the noun to which the adjective is associated. Specifically, it was noticed that colour adjectives and antiaffordance adjectives, associated with graspable objects nouns, modulate action differently when there is incongruity between the kind of grip evoked by the noun and the one requested in the motor task, but only in the case in which the noun evokes a power grip. The linguistic elaboration of the adjectives seems to take part to the recruitment of the motor cortex areas, and so this research is a further evidence in favour of the embodied cognition theory.
