Does the observation of images with high artistic content depicting faces expressing pain evoke different responses in comparison with the observation of pain expressed by photographs without any artistic value? The main aim of the present study was to compare the behavioural effects evoked by the observation of artistic images of faces expressing pain with those evoked by the observation of photographs of faces expressing the same emotion. Four categories of images were presented to the participants: Art Pain (artistic images of faces expressing pain) Real Pain (photographs of faces expressing pain); Art Neutral (images of artistic portraits of neutral faces); Real Neutral (photographs of neutral faces). The list of the images taken from art works is shown in appendix. The four categories of images and participants were gender balanced. After showing each image, participants were asked to answer three randomly presented questions 1) does this face express physical pain? 2) does this face express an emotion? 3) how much realistic is this image ? The main results are that the artistic stimuli expressing pain depict more emotional content when compared with photographs, and that the amount of pain and of emotional content of artistic stimuli are higher for male when compared with female images. The present study, for the first time, compared the representation of pain conveyed by art works with pain expressed by photographs showing that the artistic representations do not only have the ability of evoke the pain experience in third person but also that the emotion of pain expressed by art works is more intense than when it is expressed by photographic images.
