Facial emotional expressions play a crucial role in human sociology and biology and their comprehension allows us to recognize moods, needs and intentions of another human being. As regards pain, the ability to recognize the corresponding emotional expression represents a central requirement to foster social interactions. The communication of pain experience allows the establishment of an empathic relatioship with others by providing common affective representations. The aim of this study was to investigate, using eye-tracking technique, the influence of aesthetic and emotional judgments on visual behavior while subjects, naïf (n=9) to art criticism, were presented with images (n=24) of neutral or pain expression which could be painted or photographed. We also analysed if the aesthetic (artistic-realistic) and the emotive (neutral-pain) nature of images could implicate differences in gaze behaviour and in judgments (aesthetic-emotional). Analyses of eye-tracking data were carried out within four Areas of Interest (AOIs) which were: eye left, eye right, nose and mouth. To this purpose we have cosidered as indexes of the analysis the number of fixations and the duration of fixations, per categories of stimuli, in each AOI. The results have shown that aesthetic evaluation is strictly associated with the emotional valence of the represented object; our partecipants judged neutral faces as more beautiful than faces expressing pain and this evaluation was not influenced by the artistic nature of images. These results support the evidence that emotional judgment is associated with automatic processes which are in part based on the mirror mechanism. Furthermore, our partecipants looked longer to pain expressions than to neutral expressions As regards emotional judgment, in terms of number of fixations, gaze behaviour is influenced by the emotional content of the images; the exploration pattern of neutral faces seems to depend on the phenomena of the left visual field bias (LVF), differently, in case of pain expresions, which contain salient cues, eye movements are attached to them and polarized toward the right side, on the more expressive hemiface, the left one. On the other hand, the duration of fixation of faces expressing pain seems to be influenced by the artistic nature of the stimuli: in fact, painted faces seem to require longer fixations compared to photographs. Finally, our results confirmed the existence of the well-known left bias on the lateralization of the first fixations during the aesthetic task.
