This article examines the relationship between Italy and Albania from 1914 to 1943. In particular it explores the experience of a generation of Albanian artists who studied the arts in Rome during that period. This opportunity was presented to me by my recent discovery of some students’ folders in the Accademia di Belle Arti that provide information about a number of Albanian artists who studied in Rome. Research done on the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca and the British Academy of Arts in Rome also contributed towards this paper. Starting with a short analysis of the historical context that facilitated the development of cultural relations between the two countries, the text focuses on some issues that have been brought to light from these documents. These include relations between the artists and the Accademia di Belle Arti, and the establishment of specific grants to support educational journeys in Italy.
