Art exhibitions occupy a relevant part of Gabriele d’Annunzio’s Journalistic writings: especially when he worked as columnist in Rome, he had to visit many. Usually, in the reports he does not present himself as a professional art critic, but as a young man willing to be touched by Beauty in all its forms and expressions. One of his most appreciated artists is Francesco Paolo Michetti. From a picture of this friend, painted in 1895 and immediately exhibited at the Venice Biennale – winning the first prize – was derived in 1903 the most acclaimed work of d’Annunzio’s theatre: The daughter of Iorio. This essay offers a reflection on d’Annunzio’s attendance at art exhibitions, considering the theatrical perspectives offered by those events. |
