| it |
dc.description.abstract | My doctoral thesis deals with the English reception of Thucydides between 1450 and the outbreak of the Civil War (1642). This topic has not been extensively examined so far and my dissertation aims at exploring it from two different and complementary points of view. In the first part (chapters I-IV), a contextual study on 15th-early 17th century education describes Thucydides’ influence on broad sections of the intellectual community, trying to assess when and why the Athenian author became a canonical text, and pointing out the different reasons for interest in the Histories harboured by English educators. Section Two (chapters V-VIII) investigates Thomas Hobbes’s most famous translation of Thucydides – The Eight Bookes of the Peloponnesian Warre (London 1628/1629) – analyzing both the English renderings and its impressive scholarly apparatus, which is composed of three introductory sections, several marginal notes, maps and illustrations. This survey helps us to scrutinize the main issues that animate Hobbes’s version (philological, antiquarian and political), suggesting that the Eight Bookes should be considered as one of the highest moments in the Early Modern English reception of Thucydides. | it |
