At the same time Nove tendencije exhibitions (1961-1973) were held in Zagreb, in which the Tachisme’s legacy and the Constructivism revival were shown, several writings by the Italian art historian Giulio Carlo Argan were published in Croatia. From 1960 to 1969, Argan’s writings became significant for making an innovative art conception based on artists’ social role. Indeed the latter were involved in the Yugoslav cultural development towards an autonomous modernism theory, promoted by Tito’s Communist Party. Coming from different European regions, a lot of artists were known as New tendencies and they depicted such an idea where the art joined science became a new way to inquire the world. Although a sort of socialist modernism arose, a gap between art theories and art objects (kinetic or optical structures) revealed the failure of statements – opposition to art market, shared artistic achievements among artists and changing the aesthetics of industrial society - claimed by New tendencies’ characters. Such matter was indicated as a lack of ideological engagement and, as Argan suggested, it would has been solved if an «operative urgency» had been enforced between art and society. As a consequence, Argan did not support New tendency movement yet that was absorbed into the art establishment.
