Iggy Pop Life Drawing Class

Abstract

La proposta era di invitare un’icona della cultura popolare come Iggy Pop a posare, senza rivelare la propria identità agli studenti, come soggetto per una classe di disegno dal vivo; i cui risultati sarebbero stati poi donati e conservati presso lo Smithsonian Institution. La ricerca dell’artista si concentra in particolare sull’importanza di preservare contenuti e valori sociali collegati alla musica pop e alla sua fruizione, inserendoli in un più ampio contesto culturale, e in particolare sul ruolo che vengono ad assumere alcuni gruppi o cantanti rispetto a una comunità di fan1 oppure, come in questo caso, a un pubblico eterogeneo e inconsapevole. Il documento è un disegno di Sarah Tynan, un esempio di quelli che avrebbero potuto essere i risultati del lavoro della classe.

The proposal was to invite an icon of popular culture - such as Iggy Pop - to pose, without revealing his identity to the students, as a model for a drawing class: the results of these sessions would then have been donated and preserved at the Smithsonian Institution. The artist's research focuses here on the importance of preserving social content and values related to pop music and to its fruition, placing them in a broader cultural context, and in particular on the role which certain bands and musicians assume for specific communities of fans1 or, as in this case, for an heterogeneous and often unconscious public. The document is a drawing by Sarah Tynan, and serves as an example of what could have been the result of the work of the class.
