| it |
dc.description.abstract | The present work aims to examine the impact of classical sources – particularly Cicero’s Verrines – on the impeachment of the first governor general of India, Warren Hastings, by Edmund Burke in the late eighteenth century. After a brief description of the two protagonists and the cultural context of the trial, the thesis offers a close comparison between the texts of the Verrines and that of the Opening of the Impeachment. Through this comparatio, I have endeavoured to highlight the subtle and complex cultural processes involved in Burke’s use of Cicero’s orations against Verres, providing a new interpretation of the modern text in the light of the classical one. | it |
