A la manière de... Casella

Abstract

Le due raccolte pianistiche dal titolo A la manière de… composte da Alfredo Casella rispettivamente nel 1911 e nel 1914, la seconda divisa pariteticamente con Maurice Ravel, benché ritenute correntemente dalla critica come appartenenti al Casella 'minore', appaiono rivelatrici di un aspetto non secondario della personalità del musicista. Il gioco del travestimento stilistico che anima le due raccolte, attivato sul fondale di un particolare gusto per il pastiche letterario e musicale, quale quello francese, guida il compositore a specchiarsi con alcuni suoi contemporanei ma pure con due icone come Brahms e Wagner, in un confronto in cui il filtro parodistico lascia trafilare movenze più segrete.

Alfredo Casella composed the two piano collections entitled A la manière de in 1911 and 1914, respectively – the second of them being equally divided with Maurice Ravel. Although these two collections are commonly thought of as belonging to Casella's minor production, they actually reveal an aspect of Casella's personality that cannot be considered as secondary. In the two collections, Casella's stylistic disguise – moulded on the French taste for literary and musical pastiche – guides the composer to mirror himself with his contemporaries and with two icons, such as Brahms and Wagner. In these confrontations, the device of parody hints at more secret issues.
