I Fought the Law? Note sulla storia, la diffusione e il significato delle forme della Street Art sulla West Bank Barrier

Abstract

La barriera costruita dallo Stato di Israele attorno ai territori palestinesi è diventata, fin dai primi pezzi realizzati da artisti occidentali “the ultimate activity holiday destination for graffiti writers”, come la definì Banksy ai tempi della sue prime visite nel 2005. Da quel momento questo “muro” è stato letto sempre di più come un supporto per espressioni artistiche, in gran parte collegate a forme di protesta e costantemente sotto i riflettori dei media. Ma quale può essere il rapporto, in una scena geopolitica tanto complessa, tra un tale spazio e una forma espressiva come la Street Art, nata da azioni illegali all’interno di sottoculture urbane e arrivata a comunicare a un pubblico sempre più ampio?

The barrier built up by Israel alongside the Palestinian territories has become, since the firsts pieces realised by western artists, “the ultimate activity holiday destination for graffiti writers”, as Banks defined it during his first visits in 2005. This “wall” has been considered since that time as support for artistic expression under the media spolight and deeply linked with protest messages for the Palestinian condition. It’s possible to define the relationship between such a space, and such a complex geopolitical contex and Street Art, a genre born from urban subcultures whch has been able to reach a wider public?
