Città in mostra. Parma 1870, immagine debole di un potere in crisi

Abstract

Nel 1870 si snodano a Parma una serie di manifestazioni che potrebbero portare la città al centro dell’attenzione quanto meno nazionale. All’inaugurazione del monumento a Correggio si affiancano il Primo Congresso Artistico Italiano e l’Esposizione d’Arti Belle, a cui segue una Esposizione Provinciale industriale ed agricola. Si profila per la ex petite capitale l’opportunità di riaffermare, nel nuovo contesto unitario, la propria identità storica e culturale di cui proprio la tradizione artistica diventa elemento forte. Ideatore e regista del progetto è Pietro Martini, segretario dell’Accademia, che immagina queste iniziative come occasioni di rilancio di un’istituzione ormai fortemente in crisi. L’articolo intende mettere in luce la complessità e l’ambizione di un progetto, che finirà per definire un modello ripreso a livello nazionale, ma allo stesso tempo la inadeguatezza di un sistema di promozione che, non utilizzando gli strumenti della moderna comunicazione ed in particolare l’immagine, ridimensiona l’impatto anche simbolico delle iniziative.

In 1870 in Parma there were a series of cultural manifestations which would attract the attention of the nation to the town. Besides the inauguration of the Correggio monument, there was the “Primo Congresso Artistico Italiano” and the “Esposizione d’Arti Belle”, and also an “Esposizione Provinciale industriale e Agricola”. The ex petite capitale had the chance to reaffirm, in the new Unitarian context, its historical and cultural identity, of which the artistic tradition became an important element. Pietro Martini, the Academy’s secretary, was the creator and director of the project which envisaged these enterprises as opportunities for raising the profile of an institution which was passing through a crisis. This article wishes to show the complexity and ambitious scope of a project which was, at the same time to represent a national model, but also the inadequacy of a promotional system which, without using the instruments of modern communication and, in particular, images, would lower the impact, even symbolic, of the initiative itself.
