| it |
dc.description.abstract | The basilica and Benedictine monastery of San Savino in Piacenza are sure evidence of an extensive and ambitious architectural intervention behind which is readable the action of ambitious patrons who, in the eleventh century, have revived the worship of a holy bishop, the defensor civitatis, investing in suburban revival of an ancient suburban basilica, built over the remains of a Roman necropolis. The remote location, but at the same time near the town, has secured the fortune of the monastery, which became an important pole of aggregation for the development of the fabric of the medieval city, much to transform the surrounding area as a suburban neighbors. The reconstruction of the basilica of San Savino comes at a time when the increased power of the bishop, the mediator between the imperial and papal supremacy, invests in the Benedictine monastery, using images designed to express the position of mediation that the Savinian complex has taken towards religious and imperial power. Moreover, the Benedictine complex falls as part of an imperial policy aimed to the control of secular feudalism and the moral reform of the church, pursued by fostering consensus around the church hierarchy and creating the favorable conditions for an increased political power of the bishops. Following a detailed reading of unpublished documents of restoration, it was possible to established that the "Lombard Romanesque" so exalted in the works Piacenza is nothing but a consequence of philological reconstruction by the restorers. In San Savino converge a set of models, a fusion of international conventions, which have made the church saviniana "unusual" to the local context, so that the criticics has often asked the origin of the so called “Piacentine Romanesque". With the Savinian factory we are thus witnessing the implementation of architectural models, scale models, mosaics, perfectly compatible with the reformed church: these were asked to express political and territorial reinforcement of the bishop and as well the expansion of the Benedictine monastic movement supported by the Imperial authority. | it |
